5 Reasons Why Your Skin is Breaking Out

THE MURMURE TEAM

Breakouts always seem to pop up at the worst times—right before a big event, an important meeting, or just when your skin was finally behaving. But why is your skin breaking out? Let’s get to the bottom of it.

Reason #1: Your Hormones Are Partying Without You

Hormonal fluctuations can trigger breakouts, especially around your jawline and chin. Think of them as your body’s way of keeping things interesting. Stress, menstrual cycles, and even certain medications can send your oil glands into overdrive, leading to those dreaded breakouts.

Reason #2: You’re Overloading on Skincare

We get it—trying out new products is fun! But slathering on too many actives at once can compromise your skin barrier, leading to irritation and breakouts. If your skin is freaking out, consider simplifying your routine and introducing new products one at a time.

Reason #3: Your Pillowcase Is a Bacteria Wonderland

When was the last time you changed your pillowcase? If you can’t remember, it’s time. Dirt, oil, and bacteria accumulate on your pillow, transferring to your face as you sleep. Aim to swap out your pillowcase at least once a week to keep things fresh.

Reason #4: Your Diet Might Be Playing Tricks on You

Dairy, sugar, and high-glycemic foods have been linked to breakouts in some people. While everyone’s skin reacts differently, paying attention to what you eat could help you pinpoint potential triggers.

Reason #5: Your Skin Doesn’t Like Certain Ingredients

Every skin type is different, and some ingredients just don’t play nice with yours. Finding out what your skin loves (and hates) is key! We recommend using a website called INCIDecoder—it helps you understand the ingredient list of your skincare products. Keep an eye out for comedogenic and sensitizing ingredients that might be causing your breakouts.

At the end of the day, breakouts happen. The key is to listen to your skin, adjust your routine accordingly, and not stress too much (because, surprise, stress can also cause breakouts).
